Diversity in Classrooms

What comes to mind when you think about a classroom? Is it the size of the class? The curriculum the students are learning? Or how about how long a student sits in class without a form of movement to engage their mind? All of these are great things to think about. But does the thought of how diverse the classroom is a thought in your mind?  21st-century classrooms have become much more diverse since the start of education. Teachers must be able to create a classroom setting where all students are welcomed and supported. But this doesn't always happen. I watched recently a TED video where young high school speaker, Elijah Jones speaks out about how his private school in Delaware is not as diverse as he would like it to be. He mentions how in his Biology class, he is the only African American, and in his Math class, he is one of two male African Americans. He also mentions how so far, he has had no teachers of color. Elijah continues to explain how his previous school had a populat

A Sad Day In March

March was supposed to be a good start to a great Spring, but instead I lost the biggest part of my soul on March 1st. I woke up that morning invigorated, ready to start my day, head to work and laugh and smile with all I met. My goal for the day crumbled when my best friend, a four legged ball of love, who after 17 years and 9 months, just couldn't fight on anymore. Chance was what I had named him, after adopting him from shelter in Hopkington, NH. He had been a skittish boy when we first met, unsure of me, of my family, of his surroundings, but it was within this meeting that I could feel the greatest connection I would ever have with anyone or anything. That day we took him home, not before making a quick pit stop at a Kohl's as Chance had gotten ill from his nervousness of being in a car for the first time since he'd been found in a cardboard box.  There wasn't a moment where I didn't have him by my side. We spent times at the baseball field down the road f

The Dream Catcher

The story of the dream catcher, although different depending on which tribe you come from, all have similarities. Basically the dream catchers are meant to protect the sleeper's dreams. Bad dreams are trapped in the web and good dreams pass through the hole in the center of the web, flowing down the feather to them while they are asleep. In the light of the day the bad dreams are purged from the web. They were used by mothers for development and protection of children. While wrapped, the child's eyes followed the dream catcher as it swayed, strengthening them and it warded off evil while strapped out of sight on its mother's back as she worked. Later, when the hands were unwrapped, the hand-eye coordination developed. Finally the only place the child was out of sight was when the child slept. It was then hung over the sleeper's bed

Legend of the Doll-With-No-Face

A Northeast Woodlands Story as retold by Anne Jennison The Iroquois and Abenaki peoples of the Northeast Woodlands have many stories about what they call "The Three Sisters", the "sustainers of life". These Three Sisters called Corn, Beans, and Squash are central to the cultures and food ways of the Northwestern tribes. It is said that - a long, long time ago, Corn Spirit was so honored by being allowed to be one of the sustainers of life that she asked Creator what more she could do for her people. Creator told Corn Spirit that she could make a doll from the husks of corn, to make the children happy and keep them safe so the adults could do their daily work. Corn Spirit set to work, making the doll. When finished, she gave the doll a beautiful face and sent her to play with the children, and make them happy. The beautiful Cornhusk Doll went from village to village , playing with the children and doing whatever she could for them. Cornhusk Doll knew the best gam

Visiting Warner, NH

So apparently this blog isn't really taking off as fast as I had hoped for it to. But slowly its reaching the reason why I even made it. However, in the meantime, I promised a certain place that I would blog about them and get some readers of my blog to check them out. First off let me explain to you who I am trying to promote here in this blog now. I work and volunteer my time to a a place in Warner, NH called the Mt Kearsarge Indian Museum. It was created by none other then Bud Thompson in a small shed like building as he started a very small collection of Native American artifacts. His very first being a small arrowhead he found in his grandfathers crop field. Now you may ask me, "How did he start collecting?" and this is where I can tell you, that when Bud was in second grade a chief from a tribe in Connecticut came to his class, pulled everyone into a circle and spoke to Bud and his class about his people and their history. Immediately Bid was hooked, and hav

My Poor Car

Hello everyone, hope all have been well over the days since I've last posted. Halloween was so much fun as I dressed up as a pirate and walked around with my "Belle" dressed niece. I even managed to find a pirate princess and walked around a bit with her as we all went around for candy. The days have been flying by as well, as I count down the remaining weeks until this semester ends. Thanksgiving and Christmas are also right around the corner, which I am not ready for at all. Today has officially become the first day of snow of the season. Snow, white floofs that fall from the sky during the coldest time of the year. I also have just had to call my insurance company to hopefully get my windshield repiared. While on my way home Thursday night from school, I heard a very loud snap. A snap that sounded like a good size pebble had hit my window, had been of no concern to me at the time. Now, I have been sick for a week (roughly) and have been sick in bed for a few days

Halloween!!

Tuesday night wa ssupppsed to be Merrimack's trick-or-treat. Unfortunately because of the crazy storm and several power outages still trough out the state, Halloween was postponed to tonight'. I decided I was going to walk around with my sister and her family seeing how we got no one at our house in Bradford last night. In order to surprise my niece, I picked her up at school early and had dinner twitch her. She was so excited!!! She threw herself at me and shook her little feet out from under her. I will never forget the excitement she gives off whenever she sees me. Happy Halloween!!!!!!
